Trust in God

When Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, addressed a large number of her followers from a balcony of her home at Pleasant View, Concord, New Hampshire, in June, 1903, she quoted from Psalms these familiar words: "Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed." Later in her address Mrs. Eddy made this ringing declaration, which is now found in "The First Church of Christ,Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 171): "Trust in Truth, and have no other trusts." Doubtless many who heard her on that day, and others who have since read what she said, have been helped to trust Truth more fully, and thus have become less inclined to have "other trusts."

However, the temptation is, at times, to trust things and persons, rather than to place full confidence in the power and willingness of our infinite heavenly Father-Mother God to provide for us in all ways and under every circumstance or condition. Thus we sometimes find ourselves relying upon this or that person or some apparently favorable circumstance, to do for us that which only impersonal Truth, Principle, Mind, can do. We should remember that the Psalmist said, of old: "Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.... Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God."

While it is well to have unquestioning trust in God such as, under ordinary circumstances, a child has in his human parents, it is still better to have confidence that is based upon understanding of the true nature of God as infinite, changeless good. Since God is infinite good, infallible Principle, divine intelligence, Supreme Being, eternal Love—the only source of man's ability, activity, and supply—it is certain that sooner or later we shall have to trust Him completely, unreservedly, and that we must continue to do so eternally. And since we must ultimately acknowledge, and fully rely upon, God's supremacy and omnipotence, why not do so now? "Now," said Paul, "is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation."
