Over twenty-five years ago, Christian Science saved me...
Over twenty-five years ago, Christian Science saved me from a living hell. As a young man still in my teens, I had become dissatisfied with theories of life which seemed never to work out in practice. Searching in my college courses for a philosophy that could be proved, I applied myself with much misdirected nervous energy and a growing cynicism. The discouraged and morbid outlook on life which followed opened the door for physical difficulties. The first was constipation; the second nervous dyspepsia; the third, insomnia, with all the accompanying discomforts. I was in a bewildered and sinister condition for many months. During this time many doctors were consulted, including several specialists. Each one claimed to find something different that was wrong, and numerous systems of treatment were tried, ranging from medicine to New Thought, and including osteopathy and hydrotherapy. Repeated efforts during all this period to find some philosophy that would disentangle "the interlaced ambiguities of being" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 114), and explain the paradoxes of life, led to agnosticism and later to a defiant pretense of atheism.
My state of mind reached that point of morbid and morose despondency where suicide actually suggested itself.
A friend then proffered Science and Health to me. After half an hour's perusal thereof, I returned it, commenting upon its idealism with arrogant scorn. A few months later, when I was in desperate need of relief from the mental anguish which my physical disorders and religious skepticism had brought upon me, suddenly something touched me. A voice seemed to say, Why should you not at least try Christian Science? My egotism at first rebelled, but I finally was willing to admit that others had been helped, that at least it could do me no harm, and that anyway I had tried everything else and this was the only thing left.
