Our Adequate Instruction Books

In the realm of spiritual discovery and attainment Christ Jesus will ever stand pre-eminent as the Way-shower for all men and for all time. And because materiality and error are temporal, it follows that sooner or later every individual must follow in the path our Master trod in his progressive demonstration out of material beliefs into the realm of spiritual and eternal reality. Knowing this, and also recognizing that his doctrine or instruction was from God, the universal Father of all, Jesus said, "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."

Again he spoke plainly on this subject when he said, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." During his brief but glorious ministry among men Christ Jesus completely and conclusively proved the impotence and nothingness of evil and error, of fear and limitation, of discord and death, through his understanding of God, Spirit, as the only creator and governor, and of man as the spiritual image or reflection of divine Mind and Love.

It is significant that Mrs. Eddy's own healing in 1866 resulted from the spiritual illumination which came to her receptive thought as she read the Scriptural account of a healing wrought by Christ Jesus. That experience might be regarded as Mrs. Eddy's first step in following the example of the Master in his healing work. The unselfishness and spirituality which enabled her to receive this healing would not permit her to be selfishly content with physical relief and comfort. She pressed on along the line of spiritual light and faith in God until her faith expanded into and was supported by an understanding of the divine law which Christ Jesus applied in his impressive works among men. Through unselfish prayer, deep consecration, and true humility, Mrs. Eddy gained a demonstrable understanding of Christ Jesus' words, and thereby she entered the door of spiritual sense of which he had spoken. Referring to her experience, Mrs. Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 110): "In following these leadings of scientific revelation, the Bible was my only textbook. The Scriptures were illumined; reason and revelation were reconciled, and afterwards the truth of Christian Science was demonstrated."
