"Ye shall go out with joy"

Joy! What a glad sound the word has! The mention of joy lifts thought away from temporal cares into a higher mental altitude, into the spiritual realm of harmony and peace.

In Bible concordances there are numerous references to the words "joy," "joyful," and "rejoice." The Psalmist continually sang of the benefits to be derived from expressing joy. And the Apostle Paul named joy as a "fruit of the Spirit." Likewise, on page 298 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written, "When the real is attained, which is announced by Science, joy is no longer a trembler, nor is hope a cheat."

What, then, is "the real," which is "announced by Science"? To one student of Christian Science it means spiritual perception, which purifies thought through humility and love. To attain this perception is to have reached the place where it is possible to differentiate between the spiritual idea and the mortal concept of man. It is in a measure to have proved the scientific statement on page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter," and, likewise, the fact that matter, being non-intelligent, experiences neither pleasure nor pain.
