It is about twenty-four years since I was introduced to Christian Science, and I shall always be grateful to the friend who brought this wonderful teaching to my attention.

Prior to taking up this study, I had always been fond of religion and took part in church and Sunday school work in the country centers, but I grew more and more aware of my inability correctly to interpret the Bible for the children. On one occasion I sought the help of a clergyman in interpreting a passage in Isaiah, but did not gain satisfaction. This troubled me, and I voiced my dissatisfaction to a friend, who told me of Christian Science, for she was a student of it. Immediately the truth as presented gave me comfort and light, and I accepted the teaching without question. It was some time before I was able to attend the church services in the city, and this privilege lasted only for about one year, during which time I purchased the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and learned to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly.

My next experience I mention solely for the purpose of helping young students to be more awake than I was to mortal mind's antagonism. I returned to my home town full of joy at my awakened thought, but gradually the disinterestedness and disbelief around me mesmerized me into leaving my books unopened. For a space of five years I made no direct effort to use my "talent," and although I still held to Christian Science as my religion, I did not work to increase my knowledge, but was lulled into a false contentedness.
