One of His Disciples

Angels stood in shining garments,
As the day began to dawn;
Jesus first appeared to Mary
On that radiant Easter morn.

Shall we ever know the rapture
Which she felt through just one word,
When the Master called her, "Mary,"
And she turned to find her Lord?

She had proved her own salvation,
As her thought was purified;
When she saw her risen Saviour,
Consciousness was glorified.

Fear had ceased to terrify her,
Living love dispelled her gloom;
Witnessing the resurrection
Broke the shadows of the tomb.

Through those wondrous days of waiting
Jesus purged his chosen few;
In his everlasting triumph
Surely Mary saw him too!

Did she follow as he led them
Up the road to Bethany?
Did she see his earth-dream vanish
In an endless victory?

In the Master's gracious presence,
Blessing them in his dear way,
Was she standing very near him
On that great ascension day?
