With a great sense of gratitude to God I acknowledge...

With a great sense of gratitude to God I acknowledge that, through the teachings of Christian Science, I have received great good.

A Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly has brought back to my thought some experiences of many years ago. The statement from page 406 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, "The depraved appetite for alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, coffee, opium, is destroyed only by Mind's mastery of the body," has reminded me that some years ago I was healed of the liquor and smoking habits. I had been an inveterate smoker for many years, and had made some attempts to give it up prior to that time, but without success. I had finally accepted the idea that the habit had too strong a hold upon me for me to combat it. However, upon taking up the study of Christian Science and starting to attend church, I found within a week or two that both of these habits had become distasteful to me. No particular work was done for this. The Bible tells us that "if ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land." I found that I was willing to be obedient to our Leader's conviction that these were errors to be overcome. As soon as I was receptive to this thought, all desire for such things left me, and it has never returned.

Perhaps there are some who do not attempt to overcome these habits for fear of using human will. I realized when I was healed that human will alone had caused me to drink and smoke. Divine Mind never made me do either.
