The kindly remarks about the Christian Science church...
Post
The kindly remarks about the Christian Science church in a letter published in the Post are appreciated. Your correspondent showed discernment when he said, "Christian Science is universal and eternal, beginningless and endless." However, exception must be taken to his comment about the discovery of this Science.
The divine laws of God have always been present. The Bible shows that down the ages they have unfolded in varying degree to spiritually-minded men and women. The unfoldment was expressed perfectly in the life, character, and works of Christ Jesus, who understood and utilized these laws so completely that he could instantaneously heal serious cases of sickness and sin, as well as other discordant conditions. And it is evident that the spiritual laws underlying the Master's healing and teaching were discerned by his followers for about three hundred years after the ascension, since spiritual healing was continued during that time by the early Christians.
Later, a long period of gross materialism ensued, human consciousness became darkened, and the spiritual laws could no longer be seen and used. But God's laws were never absent. Through her spiritual vision, Mary Baker Eddy perceived them and saw that they were the activity which gave momentum to Jesus' teaching and healing. As a result, primitive Christianity and Christian healing were reborn to humanity. Mrs. Eddy says in her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 107): "In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and named my discovery Christian Science. God had been graciously preparing me during many years for the reception of this final revelation of the absolute divine Principle of scientific mental healing."
