In 1921 I was suffering from what the doctors diagnosed...
In 1921 I was suffering from what the doctors diagnosed as mercurial poisoning in a bad form. Everything that they could do, the doctors did for me, but I grew steadily worse. Finally, my husband was advised to send me to the south of England for the winter. I went, and was attended by one of the best physicians in the coastal town; but, although he persevered for many weeks, there was no improvement. After another thorough examination he told me that if I lived very carefully I might last two years, not longer; and he advised me to go to my native town. Thoroughly disheartened I went there, and stayed with a sister.
This sister was a Christian Science practitioner, and she most lovingly helped me. Patiently meeting all my troubles with the knowledge that the Rock to which she held was Truth, she brought me back towards health and strength. After about five weeks I returned to my own home, and gradually the healing came; at the same time I was healed of constipation. Although for several years I did not come into Christian Science, these healings were complete and have been permanent.
Then followed years of nursing a loved one, who later passed on. For many months afterward I was too ill to realize anything, for agonizing pain of nerves and heart had caused a complete collapse. Friends nursed me day and night for weeks until I could be removed to the coast. Too weak to walk, and scarcely able to see, at the urgent wish of a brother I turned wholeheartedly to Christian Science and asked for treatment from a practitioner. This was lovingly given, and then began the many months of slowly climbing back to health. Not alone this time, for Christ, Truth, was ever with me. Truly was it proved that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." Throughout the winter, day by day, the practitioner lovingly helped me until, in he springtime, I returned to my home for still further treatment from another practitioner. Words fail me when I try to speak of the tenderness, the love, and the patience she gave out to me, for much weakness and depression still had to be overcome—days of intense headache and pain—but the healing came and was absolutely complete and has been permanent.
