Obedience to the Law of Love
On page 119 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Insubordination to the law of Love even in the least, or strict obedience thereto, tests and discriminates between the real and the unreal Scientist." How this statement substantiates the words of Paul (Romans 13:8, 10), "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law;" and, "Love worketh no ill to his neighbour; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law"! Both statements emphasize that love fulfills the law of God, and that the true Christian, or genuine Christian Scientist, is characterized by his obedience to that law.
Christian Science is drawing the attention of men everywhere to the law of Love, and instructing them in obedience to it. It persists in this, notwithstanding the opposition there seems to be in some quarters to everything that would further loving-kindness and good will among men. In the world today there are those who would, if they could, put matter in the place of Spirit, God; substitute material force for spiritual power; trample underfoot all the finest spiritual impulses of humanity, based on an appreciation of love and goodness. That is not to overstate the situation, for it is a fact that in these latter days nations are using the most deadly weapons at their disposal to impose their will on other nations, regardless of human suffering and human rights, and all in the name of civilization. Civilization! What kind of civilization can it be which puts physical force first and obedience to the law of Love last? It certainly cannot be classified under Christian civilization.
Sometimes one hears such questions as these: Is Christianity to be allowed to persist? Are Christian countries going to allow themselves to sink back into the spiritual darkness of paganism? Fear and a misunderstanding of the teachings of Christianity, as Christian Science interprets them, give rise to such questions. It is certain that those who understand the teachings of Christian Science, which is pure Christianity, have no misgivings as to the outcome of the struggle that is going on between pagan, materialistic beliefs and spiritual truth. They are confident that spiritual truth will prevail; that the law of Love will win the final victory over all that in belief is opposed to good.
