A Door to Divine Power
Divine power is the power of God; and since God is ever present, as taught and proved by Jesus, and restated and again demonstrated through Christian Science as expounded by Mary Baker Eddy, this power is available today to the peoples of the world in their day-by-day experiences. It is available, but unfortunately it is not recognized or used intelligently by the many who need it, because they do not know that it can be used in a practical way. To illustrate: all day long a radio broadcasting station is sending out its messages, but though so constantly available, this service is of no use to those who do not understand how to avail themselves of it. So is it with the power of God, which is ever present; but that its availability may be proved, ignorance must be replaced by understanding.
In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written on page 192, "Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power." This statement no one can misunderstand, for it is simple, direct, and clear. It carries a promise full of hope. And it is an inspiration to the Christian Science student, helping him to bring the power of God into his experience practically and satisfyingly.
A dear, kindly mother quite unconsciously used this rule at a time when she had not yet become a student of Christian Science. During an epidemic, not only her children were attacked, but also a servant, thus depriving her of her sole assistant. One day the mother herself was suddenly stricken with all the symptoms common to that type of sickness. As she lay on her bed, the thought of the helpness patients in her charge came to her and she sat up exclaiming: "I have no time for sickness. Who will care for the others?" With that she arose, and all the symptoms dropped from her as an unneeded garment; and they did not return. That mother's unselfish thought for others, even when the arguments of the material senses cried out for selfish consideration, inspired her with divine power, and healed her of her false sense of sickness.
