Truth, the Healing Power

AS students of Christian Science, we soon learn the truth that all power belongs to God, good, and none to evil. This fact is so simple that many stumble over it. They pray to be freed from an evil power; yet it does not occur to them that the ascribing of all power to good necessarily denies any power to evil. They declare that God is almighty, and still believe in an evil power. This closes the door of thought to the Christ, Truth; to the spiritual activity which destroys all belief in an evil power. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 93): "Divine logic and revelation coincide. If we believe otherwise, we may be sure that either our logic is at fault or that we have misinterpreted revelation. Good never causes evil, nor creates aught that can cause evil." No argument can overthrow the omnipotence of good; it is a spiritual fact, and can be understood only through the practice of good.

There is a way whereby one can demonstrate that God is supreme, namely, by doing His will. The Bible teaches us that God is "a very present help in trouble." And Christian Science teaches that sin and disease, and all other false beliefs, are destroyed through the understanding and application of this truth. Each one can prove for himself that Christian Science healing is spiritual, and that results are brought about through the power of Truth, or, in other words, by the operation of the divine Principle, and not by the action of one human mind upon another, nor by human will, hypnotism, or mental suggestion. Christian Science healing is accomplished through the activity of right thinking and right living. In no other way can we demonstrate the divine Principle which heals.

Sin, disease, and death come from false mortal belief. Mrs. Eddy admonishes (ibid., p. 418), "Stick to the truth of being in contradistinction to the error that life, substance, or intelligence can be in matter." Since there is no life, intelligence, or substance in matter, it necessarily follows that all material theories concerning disease are false; so that the solving of all human problems, including that of healing, must be wrought out on a spiritual basis. Since matter is material thought objectified, it follows that disease, in whatever form, is but the objectification of diseased beliefs upon the body. And these beliefs, or erroneous thoughts, originate in so-called mortal mind.
