Topic: Training in Civilization
[Dr. Blagden, Bishop of Peterborough, in the Cambridge Review, as quoted in Public Opinion,London, England]
We may grow tired of hearing that civilization is at the crossroads, but the fact remains, that is where civilization habitually is. We cannot put ourselves to sleep with the comforting reflection that progress is continuous and assured, and that everything will be well in this happily ordered world.
The march of events is no automatic process; it is determined by the action of the human, beings who take part in it, and they, alas! because they are human, are forever being tempted to travel down the wrong road and to miss the signposts which should have kept them straight.
