Item of Interest

Throughout the world numerous efforts are made through various and varied organizations to bring about international, social, artistic, industrial, and political understanding. These efforts are based largely on the conviction that more intimate knowledge of countries and peoples, of their customs, culture, and habits of thought, will promote peace and good will as well as educational and commercial values.

The Mapparium in the Publishing House of The Christian Science Publishing Society is proving its utility in bringing to its visitors, who already number several hundred thousand, a better knowledge of geography and the comparative locations of the divisions of the earth. It is promoting a better understanding of things international, and is showing to reflective thinkers the reason for various world movements and the trend of world events, because it makes evident the cause, by proximity or otherwise, for the interest or disinterest of nations in them.

Its purely geographical aspects are almost unending in their instructive possibilities for both adults and children. That this is true is indicated by many who come regularly and express their desire to refresh and increase their knowledge of geography. Individuals come weekly to observe the location of the scenes of current events. Thus a better comprehension of them is established in the thought of many who before evinced little interest in world affairs. An outstanding event, or a film dealing with an odd corner of the world is sure to bring literally hundreds who wish to ask questions concerning the localities involved.
