"Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons" (Acts 10:34)—Goodspeed offers the more modern rendering: "Now I really understand that God shows no partiality;" and Moffatt has: "I see quite plainly that God has no favourites."

"The land of the shadow of death" (Isa. 9:2)—The original Hebrew consonants can be read to mean either "shadow of death" or "darkness, deep darkness, deep shadow," according to the vowels presupposed by the translator. (See Brown, Driver, Briggs: Hebrew Lexicon, p. 853.) Consequently, the margin of the Revised Version, and also Smith read: "a land of deep darkness;" and Moffatt: "a land of shadows."

"A light to lighten the Gentiles" (Luke 2:32)—Literally, "a light for revelation (apokalupsis) of the Gentiles." It may be noted that "apokalupsis" is the word from which our English term "apocalypse" is derived. Good-speed translates: "a light of revelation for the heathen;" and Moffatt: "a light of revelation for the Gentiles."
