God Is Love
In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has used wonderful synonyms for God, which, when understood and scientifically applied in any and every circumstance, render evil of no effect, and quickly restore the sense of harmony. Each claim of error may seem to have its own peculiar phase, but Truth always comes to the uplifted and instructed thought in such a way as to meet the particular needs of the situation. For example, can we ever doubt that the recognition, acceptance, and demonstration of God as infinite, all-embracing Mind or intelligence would solve the business problems of our times, destroy the beliefs of mental derangement, of unemployment and lack, and bring about a wise and intelligent adjustment of supply and demand?
Perhaps the most beautiful synonym for God, one which is dear to the heart of the Christian Scientist, is Love. Who can tell the number of those whose fears have been stilled, whose hearts have been comforted, and whose health has been restored through its tender appeal? "God is love," says the Apostle John, and down the ages untold millions may have heard his message with but a limited comprehension of its precious import and tremendous significance. It was the privilege of our divinely inspired Leader to reveal its deeper meaning, and to prove that love, reflecting Love, is a living, vitalizing factor in human experience. Hers was the joyous task of showing us how we may understand Love and realize its meaning for ourselves, and thus be partakers of the unspeakable joy which comes with even a slight understanding of the mighty truth that "God is love."
The understanding of the truth that God is Love and Life will enable us to conquer sin and sickness of every name and nature, yes, and even to overcome, as our Master did, the last enemy of all—the claim of death. Every earnest follower of the Master longs to emulate his example, and to obey his loving command, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils," and this can only be accomplished through an understanding of God such as he possessed, and the practical application such as he made of that understanding in daily life.
