It was twelve years ago that I first read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
It was twelve years ago that I first read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was suffering from leakage of the heart and had been unemployed for over a year. I had lost all faith in religious creeds. Grudgingly I acceded to the truth in Mrs. Eddy's statements. I should have liked to study Christian Science further, but allowed an obstruction to present itself without making any effort to overcome it. However, the heart trouble disappeared, and I was able to take up my work as a machine bookkeeper. I did not recognize that my healing came from acknowledging spiritual truths.
Years apart from God followed. Sickness, struggle, and poverty were constantly with us. A son was born, and my husband and I desired his life to hold only good things. This desire led me back toward Christian Science. We were searching for a Sunday school for him, where he could study the Bible and not learn fear of evil, but the power and value of good. A friend recommended the Christian Science Sunday School; so we enrolled the child and were pleased with the progress he made. We, however, had only a vague idea of the teachings and real meaning of Science. I began to read and reread chapters of Science and Health, after which a new feeling of harmony and security came into the home.
Then I was stricken with tuberculosis. I did not know that I could turn to a Christian Science practitioner for help. Instead, I followed a physician's advice and entered a sanatorium. I took with me copies of the Christian Science Sentinel provided by the literature distribution committee of the local Christian Science church. As I was reading them, other patients, noticing what I was reading, offered to exchange with me their copies of the Sentinel and The Christian Science Monitor which friends had brought to them and which they had finished reading. We found there were many patients interested in and studying Christian Science.
