I had been brought up to attend an orthodox church, but...
I had been brought up to attend an orthodox church, but in my early youth I felt it was not fulfilling any useful purpose in my life, and so ceased to attend. Later, during a number of years at sea, away from home, friends, and relatives, I was strongly aware of the lack of a religiou anchor. When in port I was always conscious of a desire to go to church, but felt it would be time wasted. I was led to take up the study of Christian Science through the healing of a friend, and it has brought me satisfaction.
During the past nine years, when faithfully applied, it has supplied my every need. During the so-called depression, with business seemingly at a standstill, I was led to branch out in my own business. I am grateful to the friends who gave me the opportunity to serve when the struggle seemed very much uphill. Through obedience to the teachings of Christian Science my business has steadily increased and prospered.
I should like to tell of the overcoming of the tobacco habit, to which I had been a slave for many years. I had always considered it a bad habit, and had tried many times to overcome it by will power, but without success. In fact, it became stronger. I had been interested in Christian Science some time before realizing that the use of tobacco is inconsistent with its teachings. Then the struggle began, and later I thought I had been healed, but was again tempted, and before long was indulging the appetite more than ever. I realized that I was being weak. Finally, I decided that anything worth while is worth an effort. On page 406 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says, "Resist evil—error of every sort—and it will flee from you." I then took my stand for truth, refusing to be tempted, and in a short time the desire left. I am grateful to testify that I am now entirely free from this habit.
