The True Stimulus

Christ Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly," and Christian Science shows how this more abundant life may be obtained. It reasons scientifically that God is Life, Mind, and that man is His spiritual idea, the reflection of Life, Truth, and Love. By realizing these facts of being, one expresses vitality, health, vigor, strength, courage, endurance, freshness, here and now, in proportion to his spiritual understanding. And this progress is accompanied by a lessening of the belief in inaction, diseased action, overaction, or reaction.

In this connection it is of interest to note the erroneous belief held by many that alcoholic stimulants, if taken in moderation, promote vitality, energy, and so on. Similar belief is prevalent in regard to certain foods. Yet how can these bring the more abundant life of which Christ Jesus spoke? In "the scientific statement of being" Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."

The use of alcohol may seem temporarily to revive and invigorate one. We know, however, that, according to the verdict of physicians, sooner or later regular indulgence in it, even in moderation, tends to sap vitality, energy, strength, and vigor. It can never give that consciousness of true vitality which is made possible through the right understanding of our Father-Mother God, and our relationship to Him. In many instances the moderate drinker and the habitual and heavy drinker have been healed in Christian Science through the understanding of the ever-operative divine Principle, Love, the only true stimulus.
