The Boy Jesus

In human history, the life of Christ Jesus has been an "unspeakable gift" for which all Christians give thanks to God. Although his life and teachings have been diversely interpreted, sometimes being compressed into creed and dogma, and often understood but dimly, yet his example has remained the unique and cherished pattern for human thought and conduct. There has been the conviction that once upon this earth a perfect life has been lived.

On page 38 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we read these words: "Jesus mapped out the path for others. He unveiled the Christ, the spiritual idea of divine Love." To those who are students of Christian Science, the life of Christ Jesus takes on new significance and potency. It reveals the nature of the real man and his relation to God. With love and gratitude in our hearts we set ourselves to follow the path which his life mapped out. The path, we find, runs a straight course from early chilhood to the end of his earthly life. There is no break in its continuity.

In the second chapter of Luke's Gospel we read, "And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him." A child, filled with wisdom! The grace, the actual loveliness of God, upon him! This winning picture of childhood stands out in startling contrast to that drawn by the carnal mind as the likeness of the average child. For children to be mischievous, noisy, restless, boisterous, even selfish and destructive, is accepted by many as the normal trend of development, as a temporary form of what is nowadays called "self-expression."
