Destroying the Common Enemy

How many times does it seem that men, like the children of Israel, find themselves pursued by enemies! Hearts yearn for peace, but on all sides appear only strife, greed, and hatred.

Though men and women, lacking an understanding of God, may think their prayers in vain, Christian Science, understood and practiced, brings deliverance from enmity, and from the consequent beliefs of war and oppression, with a certainty which is surely expressive of the love of Christ. This Science enables its faithful followers to destroy the sense of enmity through the understanding of God, proving "on earth peace, good will toward men," to be an actual, present fact. We learn in Christian Science to understand, not merely to believe, that God is Love, and that His allness does not permit the existence of anything which does not express Him.

To human sense, those about us in our daily life often appear to be enemies. Whence this sense of antagonism? Before we lay blame at the door of our neighbors, let us examine our own thinking. At first this may seem difficult to do. But the more we understand of Truth, the more we realize the necessity for honesty and impartiality in our reasoning. We must first make sure that we ourselves are reflecting love, compassion, and good will, before we accuse our brothers of bad faith. We should first put our own mental house in order before we accuse our neighbors of being untidy housekeepers.
