The True Substance of Happiness

When the student, through his study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, begins to see the true substance of God and the man He created; when he begins to grasp the fact of the insubstantiality of corporeal body, material existence, and all the phases of evil, then the substance of happiness will more clearly appear for him. Humanity's search for happiness has been legitimate. It has largely failed because of ignorance of what the true substance of happiness is.

Happiness is not an aim in itself. It is result. It is effect. It is a product of right thinking. We are likely to become conscious of its presence when we have stopped thinking about it at all. The question to ask oneself is not, Am I finding happiness? but, Am I aiding others in finding it? Not, What good is coming to me? but, What good am I reflecting on behalf of others? When one is entirely engrossed in expressing God to the highest of one's ability in thought and word and deed, then joy is sure to be present in one's consciousness.

One of the foes to human happiness is monotony. Monotony is in mortal mind. Variety is in divine Mind. Dullnes is material thinking. Interest is in Soul-consciousness. Routine repetition of familiar tasks cannot dull our life when there is spontaneity, freshness, and variety, interest and expectancy, in our thinking. Some of us may have much the same human program each day, but we do not need to do the same thinking each day. Thinking reflected from divine Mind is always active, buoyant, strong, varied.
