Before knowing anything of Christian Science, I was...

Before knowing anything of Christian Science, I was told by a friend to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, with the thought that God is Love. This seemed very wonderful to me, but I did not read the book, for I thought I should have to give up many so-called pleasures. Six months later I was visiting a brother who was ill in a hospital. One morning I received word that he was in a serious condition. I started to drive to the hospital, a distance of seven miles, and it seemed as though everything got in my way. I was tense and very impatient at the delay. Suddenly the words came to my thought, "God is Love." The tension and impatience left me, and I knew that everything was all right. I decided then to find out why "God is Love."

It is with a heart full of gratitude that I relate the following proof of God's help. While I was riding with my husband, we were hit by a car coming out of a side road. I saw the car coming, but remembered nothing more until I regained consciousness and found that I was in a hospital. I realized that I was declaring to all, "God is my Life." I asked that a practitioner, one hundred and fifty miles away, be notified. Then I lapsed into unconsciousness again. The X ray showed that I had a fractured skull, fractured pelvis, and broken leg. As my husband was also in the hospital and we were many miles from home, it seemed necessary that I stay there. The doctors thought that a cast for the leg was necessary and would have to remain on for six weeks, but it was removed in a very short time. I am grateful to say that I was walking around the town in four weeks.

When the insurance investigator came he asked me to tell him what I remembered of the accident. I told him that I remembered nothing. Then it was brought out that I was thrown out and that the car, after turning over three times, landed on me. I was also told that on the way to the hospital I said to my husband that we must rely on God as He is our Life and strength. While unconscious, to mortal sense, I was conscious of God as Life, proving what Mrs. Eddy meant when she said (No and Yes, p. 10), "All consciousness is Mind and eternal." On leaving the hospital I was told by the superintendent that I had taught them one thing—that they did not have to fear.
