The Open Door

[Original article in German]

In our human effort to advance spiritually, there may be times when all ways to the desired goal seem to be closed. We may have striven for a long time; we may have taken right human footsteps; we may have applied our understanding of Christian Science, and still it may appear to us that we have gone forward but a little way. We may ask ourselves in quiet hours: What is the reason for my not solving this or that human problem? What do I have to learn from this experience?

In such circumstances it is always helpful to open the Bible and ponder its message in the light of Truth. God never leaves us without an answer if we sincerely seek His guidance. Under all conditions we can receive through His Word the answer which we need. His promises are numerous and are more glorious than we can imagine. Our mistake is that we do not always sufficiently heed these promises, because we are busying ourselves in removing seeming obstacles. And yet the promises of the Bible are at all times a rich source of power, of calm, and of surety.

God's commands are our signposts and protection; and at the same time the goal of perfection is glimpsed in the divine promises. If we would reach our goal, it is necessary that we know both the command and the promise, in order that we may follow the command and joyfully and confidently await the fulfillment of the promise.
