Among the Churches

Current Notes

Compton, California (First Church).—Dedicatory services were conducted Sunday, May 23, 1937, in the morning and evening, in the handsome building of First Church of Christ, Scientist, which is located at Laurel and Acacia Streets.

In the Christian Science denomination, church edifices are not dedicated until they have been completely paid for. Since the indebtedness on the local edifice is now liquidated, the directors of the church were privileged to arrange for its dedication.

A Christian Science church service was first held in Compton on Sunday, July 20, 1913, when a group, which had become interested in Christian Science through the healing of a friend, met in a private home in Compton to read the Christian Science Lesson-Sermons. Subsequently they met at other homes, and the increased attendance was so marked that arrangements were made to hold the services in the I. O. O. F. hall.
