I should like to tell of a demonstration of the need of right work and supply being met in our experience. Two years ago I was working in a small city near Los Angeles, engaged as a bookkeeper. I had been in this position for about four years, and although much progress had been made, further growth seemed to be denied because of a seeming lack of opportunity for advancement. I had been striving daily to overcome the condition and prove that "progress is the law of God" (Science and Health, by Mrs. Eddy, p. 233), but results seemed negligible. Realizing that my only avenue to further advancement lay through right thinking alone, I applied myself more wholeheartedly to knowing that there is only one Mind and that, as the son of God, man is obedient only to His government. I was finally led to resign my position and take a short vacation, which I had been desiring for several years.
My one chance of re-employment with another firm was voided when my application was refused on the grounds that the company could not pay the salary I was asking. So I made a trip to Los Angeles to find a position.
The first morning was given over to the study of the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly in one of the Reading Rooms, followed by a visit to a practitioner. After lunch, at the recommendation of one of my friends, I made a round of a few of the larger public accounting firms to see if they might know of a place. I did not feel that I would be capable of handling anything much larger than a bookkeeping job, though I had been studying advanced accounting for over a year. But that afternoon I was led to apply for a position as junior accountant. To my joy, I was given the position, to begin work in five weeks as a temporary employee with an opportunity to work permanently. The salary was exactly what I had been asking, but the promotion and the opportunity for progress that the position afforded far exceeded my expectations.
