The Key to the Scriptures
[Original article in German]
The human yearning to find a higher, nobler way of life leads many to the Bible, and the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy gives us a practical understanding of its treasures. Those who study this book find in it a wonderful key to the spiritual meaning of the Bible and its healing power. Increased spirituality makes clear to us many Bible passages which had seemed dark and obscure; and, besides, this unfoldment gives us the true concept of Deity.
A sincere student of Christian Science, traversing a valley of tribulation, searched for a better understanding of the words, "He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee." For a long time the true significance of the words seemed hidden from her. It appeared as though, in spite of her faithfulness and her earnest efforts, the waters of affliction would not subside; and her prayers seemed to remain unanswered.
After a talk with a Christian Science practitioner, the above-quoted words addressed to Job by Eliphaz, appeared to her in a new light, and brought her wonderful comfort. She recognized that she had hitherto been entertaining a false and limited sense of God, and that the God who is immutable divine Love could not test His beloved child by sending him misery, lack, sickness, and sin, and after a certain time of probation have compassion on him and deliver him from his distresses. Through the teaching of Christian Science she understood that distress of every name and nature is imposed only by mortal mind, hence has nothing whatever to do with God, divine Mind. She realized the truth of our Leader's threefold statement in "Unity of Good" (p. 20): "First: God never made evil. Second: He knows it not. Third: We therefore need not fear it." Through this new understanding of the unreality of evil she was uplifted and freed.
