God's "unspeakable gift" has come to me, and for this I...
God's "unspeakable gift" has come to me, and for this I should like to give thanks with a sincere heart and "remember his marvellous works that he hath done." The Psalmist calls upon us to "declare his works with rejoicing," and so it is a special joy for me to be able to testify to God's greatness.
Over three years ago I injured my right leg by a fall in the garden, and had to be helped into the house. At first I was worried about my church duties, but immediately I was able to correct this false thought, and I knew the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement in her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 (p. 1), "You can never lack God's outstretched arm so long as you are in His service." This accident occurred on a Saturday evening, shortly before my preparations for the service on the next day, and I had to fulfill my duties as First Reader at that time. Now was the time to furnish evidence of Truth, and I went right to work to remove from my consciousness that mortal "self" which would claim something, and to realize for myself the perfect idea of God, which never can change and therefore is never hindered from doing its duty toward God, that is, from reflecting Him. A great feeling of gratitude came over me for the knowledge that there is only one perfect God, and therefore only one perfect man. This feeling of gratitude gave me strength to get up and do my duty immediately.
Although walking caused me pain, the pain was repeatedly overcome through the steadfast holding to the everpresence of good and to the all-encircling love of God, in whom we live. Later it was discovered that the bone had been broken in several places. With great gratitude I can bear witness that through the endeavor to hold firmly in my consciousness the perfect idea as invulnerable, the wonderful proof was brought out that without making any concessions to matter all things are possible to God, and the healing was a complete one.
