"Before they call"

"And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear." This beautiful promise in Isaiah was proved true by a student of Christian Science who was taking a motor trip into the country. The Scientist was a guest of relatives who were physicians and students of medicine, and who were rather intolerant of what they believed Christian Science to be.

During the drive the young man at the wheel kept the car at a high rate of speed, and upon starting for home over a long stretch of pavement increased the speed until conversation was entirely impossible, owing to the rush of wind through the windows. It was then that the Scientist was tempted to be apprehensive, and her first thought was to remonstrate with the young man for his recklessness. With the temptation, however, came the thought, Why not handle this situation in the way that it should be handled in Christian Science? Instantly, then, she turned to God with a silent prayer for the truth to be revealed to her, and soon she was thanking Him that the Mind which is ever present and all-powerful is the only Mind. She then began to rejoice that God, Mind, is loving, protecting, all-encircling, all-embracing; that He forever supplies the needs of man, His reflection; and she began joyfully to praise Him in gratitude for this beautiful truth.

While she was "yet speaking," the car was brought to a gentle stop at the side of the pavement, and she looked up inquiringly at the young man, who was regarding her thoughtfully. "A puncture at seventy-five miles an hour," he said; and then a little later, "I know why we didn't turn over into that cornfield."
