Meeting in Connection with the Work of Librarians, June 8, 1937

Address, in part, by Ezra W. Palmer, Clerk of The Mother Church

I am sure that all here today realize the profound importance of the Christian Science Reading Rooms to the Cause of Christian Science. They provide the means whereby inquirers may come and learn of Christian Science by reading and study, without being influenced by personal opinions. Frequently those in trouble do not care to discuss their difficulties; they hunger for a quiet place in which to pray and to meditate about God. To satisfy this great need the wisdom of our Leader provided the Reading Rooms as a refuge where, in calmness and stillness, the seeker may become acquainted with God and find surcease from human ills.

To the Reading Rooms come business men, harassed by doubts and fears, hesitant as to what decisions they shoul make, and therefore seeking the Reading Room to await the guidance of the one unerring Mind. The office worker, the laborer—those from every walk of life—find within our Reading Rooms the peace and harmony for which they have searched in vain in the world. Here, perhaps for the first time, they feel the touch of the finger of God, and have the blessed experience of knowing that divine Science is unfolding to their awaking thought.
