A deep desire to give to the world something of the wonderful sense of joy and satisfaction and protection that the teachings of Christian Science have brought into my life impels me to write the following testimony as an expression of heartfelt gratitude for one of many healings which I have experienced since taking up the study of Christian Science twenty-two years ago.
While I was on a camping holiday with my husband and children a few years ago, we went for a climbing expedition one day up some mountains at the back of our camp. We had reached our objective, having been over the most difficult part of the climb, and were resting on a narrow path preparatory to descending again. I was standing up and leaning against a small sapling which suddenly gave way, causing me to fall backwards down the side of the mountain. I turned somersaults three times, and was only brought to a standstill by landing with great force on the lower part of my back on a rough tree stump. For a few moments I could not think, the pain seemed so great, and all sorts of suggestions came crowding into my mind—that I was injured for life and would never be able to walk again, and so forth. These I endeavored to refute with the true statements that man is unfallen and uninjured; also I tried to realize the truth of Mrs. Eddy's words on page 427 of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she says, "Man is the same after as before a bone is broken or the body guillotined."
As soon as possible my husband and children scrambled down to where I was lying, and together we repeated "the scientific statement of being" from our textbook (p. 468) and the Lord's Prayer, and silently and audibly declared the truth. After a while the pain grew less and I was able to move, and soon managed to negotiate the long descent back to camp with a great deal of assistance. My husband and I worked very earnestly all that night and the next day to know the truth about the condition, and, as the pain still seemed intense, we got in touch with a Christian Science practitioner, who immediately started treatment. From then on, the pain gradually lessened and I was able to move about without apparent difficulty. In a few days we had to return home, as I was due at my post as Reader on the following Sunday; and I felt full of gratitude that I was able to do my part towards conducting the services without anyone noticing anything wrong.
