When Christian Science came into our home, sickness...
When Christian Science came into our home, sickness seemed more real than health; discord more real than harmony; evil more real than good; even that which seemed to manifest itself in material supply was disappearing.
One day a man came into my place of business and told of the wonderful healings that had taken place through the understanding of Christian Science, and although this made a great impression at that time, and we had no reason to doubt the man's statements, as he was well known for his truthfulness and honesty, yet we were so absorbed with our material sense of things that none of these demonstrations were discussed by my wife and me after the first day.
About a year later my wife came into our place of business and said that she would have to have an operation immediately, as she could not stand the pain any longer. We had tried almost every remedy known to medical science and had found no real relief. I was not what one would call a religious man, because I could not believe there could be a Supreme Being, or power, that would send suffering to an innocent babe; but I did believe that there was, or must be, a supreme intelligence governing all from the standpoint of perfection. So when my wife asked for help, I went outside and, looking up, asked God what I should do; and immediately came the answer, just as clearly as I had asked, "Try Christian Science." Turning to my wife, I told her to go to a practitioner; and that was the beginning of the understanding that God is good, and good is All. In a few weeks my wife had a beautiful healing of defective eyesight and found it was not necessary to use glasses, which she had been compelled to wear for many years. She was also healed of her other difficulties. I never wanted to be called a religious fanatic, or a hypocrite, but I used what I understood of Christian Science, and put it to the test by healing others.
