Bible Notes
"Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee" (Job 22:21)—The term here translated "to acquaint thyself with" could also mean "to show harmony with," "be familiar with," "know intimately" (Brown, Driver, Briggs: Hebrew Lexicon, p. 698). Consequently, one could render: "Be in harmony with him, and be at peace." Then, too, the Hebrew word "tobah," represented by the English term "good," can also mean "welfare, benefit, prosperity, beauty, happiness;" and so it has been suggested that in this verse we read: "prosperity shall come to thee" (ibid., p. 375), or, as Smith has it: "therefore will your increase be good."
"Man became a living soul" (Gen. 2:7)—The term "nephesh," which is translated "soul" in this passage, has, in Hebrew, a rather wide meaning, signifying not only "life or soul," but also, alternatively, "self, person, desire, appetite, emotion, passion" (Brown, etc., op. cit., p. 659).
"Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils" (Isa. 2:22)—Smith suggests: "Cease trusting man, in whose nostrils is breath; for of what account is he;" while Moffatt has: "Put no more trust in man, with his mere breath of life."
