In a recent issue, under the heading of "Pacifism Attacked," you quote from a bishop who, after attacking pacifism, turns his attack on Christian Science. I should be glad if you would grant me space to reply. The bishop is reported as writing in his diocesan magazine, "It seems to me [pacifism is] as blasphemous as is Christian Science, which prays for bodily health without having recourse to the means God has given us for the cure of the body."

Christian Science presents only the teachings of Jesus, which are generally accepted by all Christian churches. The point at issue is that Christian Science accepts unconditionally the command of Jesus to his students to "heal the sick" by spiritual means only, as he did. Jesus showed himself as "the way," by performing the many marvelous healings with which we are all familiar. In doing these works he did not employ the practice of medicine common to his day. Neither did he equip his seventy disciples with a medicine chest when, after teaching them in the name of his Father, he sent them out to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, and raise the dead.

Today, students of Christian Science are again finding that common, everyday evils, including sickness, are still subject to "thy name." Is it blasphemous to believe in and to accept Jesus' promise literally today, "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover"?
