Faith and Understanding

There are recorded in the Old Testament many proofs of the power of faith in God—particularly in the experiences of Moses, of Elijah, and of Elisha. And in the New Testament (Hebrews 11) there is an extended reference to similar proofs of faith in divine power by Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, and others.

The Master frequently enjoined those who were with him to have faith. "Have faith in God," he said at one time. And again, when questioned by his disciples as to why they had not been able to heal the epileptic boy, he replied, "Because of your unbelief;" and he continued, "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." Often Jesus required faith of those who came to him for healing, and sometimes he commended their faith, as in the case of the woman at the house of Simon, the Pharisee, when he said, "Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace."

On some occasions Jesus rebuked his disciples for lack of faith; as, for instance, at the time of the storm on the lake, when at his command the winds and waves were stilled, and he said to the erstwhile fearful ones, "Where is your faith?" When Peter essayed to go to him on the water and, beginning to sink, cried out to him, "Lord, save me," it is recorded that "Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?"
