May I be permitted a brief reply to a criticism of the recent lecture on "Christian Science and Universal Happiness," as contained in your issue of May 13.

The happiness of the individuals, of the nation, and of the human race has been a constant urge, gathering momentum as it has come down the centuries, especially during the Christian era. The present manifest desire for world peace, for better health, for better laws, for better morals, for better systems of education, for better housing conditions, is a sign of the quest for happiness; and I cannot help thinking that even your correspondent shares in this great quest, in spite of his modesty.

The definitions he complains of may not be in accordance with his personal views and human experience, but that does not prove them bad. Human views of happiness vary considerably, as the lecturer pointed out. The definition of happiness quoted from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 57), "Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it," is a statement concerning happiness which may be demonstrated in human experience. All human discord, whether pain, disease, or sin, can be overcome by a knowledge of Truth as revealed in Christian Science. Demonstration is the proof of the truth of any statement. The statements made by the lecturer about God, and about happiness, can be demonstrated. Dominion over error, not submission to it, is the keynote of Christian Science.
