True Submission
MEN are prone to submit to the many encroachments of evil. Believing them to be inevitable, they do not adequately avail themselves of the redemptive and preventive power of Christianity. Yet, during his three years' ministry, did not Christ Jesus teach and demonstrate liberation from sin and want, disease and death, according to the beneficent law of God? Did he not leave in his wake a healed and grateful multitude? And did not his early followers do likewise? Why is not this liberation more generally manifested in our day, since the same God is present, and the way of Christianity is still the way of the master Christian? It is because the average individual fails to understand and adopt the divine mandate, "Acknowledge my might."
What is it that causes men to submit to sickness, and even to meet it halfway? Usually their fears and their blind surrender to man-made laws, based on materialism. What causes men to submit to sin? Usually the belief that its indulgence will bring them physical pleasure or worldly profit. Others submit on the plea that in some cases the temptation to sin seems overpowering.
Christian Science shows its students the way out of these phases of false submission. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 381), "Ignorant of our God-given rights, we submit to unjust decrees, and the bias of education enforces this slavery." Christian Science offers the spiritual education which presents enslavement as illegitimate, and declares that Spirit, the one Lawgiver, upholds health, never disease, righteousness, never sin. It teaches that the will of God is always something to rejoice in, something to revere, not to fear. In short, it teaches the value of true submission.
