To acknowledge publicly the great debt I owe to our beloved Leader, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, is my joy and privilege. She says in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 454), "Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action." I desire to give this testimony of a wonderful healing that came simply as a result of my reading this textbook.
Up to the time Christian Science was first presented to me I had never known what it was to be free from doctors' care. From the time that I can first remember I was considered to be a very delicate child, and was brought up under the belief that I could never expect to be well or active. When I was about nineteen, the material condition became so alarming that I was given transfusions of blood; and some time later two very serious abdominal operations were submitted to, but with no apparent success.
The last physician, to whom I went every two weeks for three years, said I had floating kidney, cirrhosis of the liver, paralyzed bowels, pernicious anemia, and a serious nervous condition. I am grateful that I did not let this condition deter me from going to France during the years 1917—1919, because through going I found the "pearl of great price."
