The Wine of Inspiration

In the Gospel of John is given an account of a wedding feast. Toward the close of it, Jesus' mother came to him and said, "They have no wine." Apparently, what formed an essential provision for the guests, according to the established order of that time, had given out. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 598), Mrs. Eddy gives the spiritual meaning of "wine" as "inspiration; understanding."

Mary was confident that Jesus, who saw beneath the surface of things, would rightly meet this seeming lack. Jesus knew that to the infinite source of all that is real and eternal there could be no lack, no cessation of supply. He knew supply to be primarily spiritual. So, to Jesus it was eminently natural to demonstrate the fact that the wine of inspiration was ever present; while for those at the feast the human need was met.

And what of ourselves, today, when the claims of mortal mind would tempt us to believe we "have no wine"; when the supply seems to fail, and so dark seems the way that, like the Psalmist, we cry out, "Is his mercy clean gone for ever?"
