The autumn of 1927 found me mentally sick of academic...

The autumn of 1927 found me mentally sick of academic studies, so that I asked to be relieved of attending college any longer, and to devote myself to that which was more attractive to me. I did not know it then, but I was yearning for spiritual understanding. All the highways of material sense, upon which I journeyed, seemed in some inexplicable way to lead to a blank wall.

I read and reread my mother's copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, as well as copies of Journal, Sentinel, and Monitor. The seed has been planted, and I am praying that I too may have that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus." The understanding which I have gained and am gaining each day has enabled me to overcome fear, has given me happiness and assurance, and, above all, a right understanding of God and His reflection, spiritual man. I have been wonderfully protected from pneumonia, from having to wear glasses, and in an experience which might have resulted in a broken leg. I have been healed of a running ear. I am very, very grateful.

On page vii of the Preface to Science and Health are the following words: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings. The wakeful shepherd beholds the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day." Hitherto, my life had been dark and dreary with its attendant errors. Then this new light was seen, and its beams became more radiant and buoyant as I learned the way of constructive thinking and acting. I thank God that He revealed to Mrs. Eddy the truth of being and the Comforter, making it available for each of us, now and forever; also that, through the turmoil of material sense, the Bible survived and is illumined now as never before.
