Late in 1905 my wife and I came to a city on the north...
Late in 1905 my wife and I came to a city on the north Pacific coast to make our permanent home among entire strangers. Among our new acquaintances were some Christian Scientists. We were favorably impressed by their uniform kindliness, cheerfulness, sincerity, and the wholesome atmosphere we found in their presence. Shortly after this, early in 1906, my wife had an attack of what was called the grippe. Up to that time we had always relied on physicians and material remedies when sickness overtook us. Since we had only a casual acquaintance with two or three of the many local physicians, our confidence in them had not been established. Immediate help was needed, and since we had gradually been losing faith in the medical schools and practices, and largely as an experiment, we sought help of a Christian Science practitioner, who gave my wife an absent treatment. This resulted in a practically complete healing overnight. A week or so later my wife discovered she had at the same time been healed of chronic backache, which had caused her daily suffering for many years. We regarded this as wonderful, as no mention had been made of that particular ailment when talking to the practitioner. This healing was permanent.
This was convincing evidence of the efficacy of Christian Science, so I myself turned to it and a Christian Science practitioner for relief from severe headache, supposed to result from imperfect functioning of the stomach. Material means had been wholly unavailing either to cure or to alleviate the trouble. The practitioner's work brought some relief soon, but the healing was slow, and it was some time before entire freedom was attained; but it did eventually come in its completeness, and I have been free of the attacks now for years. During all these thirty years I have depended entirely on Christian Science in overcoming the ills "that flesh is heir to" and the problems that beset mortal existence. Among the cases of healing and protection that I have experienced are healings of stomach trouble, fatigue, colds, restoration of flesh through new growth, removal of foreign substance from the eyes, protection in emerging unharmed from an attack by a vicious dog, help in financial problems, recovery of lost articles, and many other instances of the supremacy of divine law and harmony.
My profound gratitude goes out to God for the good that has come and continues to come to me daily and hourly through Christian Science; to Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered this Science of Christian healing, wrote its textbook and other books on the subject, founded The Mother Church and its various activities; to The Christian Science Board of Directors and the other workers at headquarters and elsewhere, who so loyally carry on the work; to the faithful practitioners, who lovingly and efficiently extend help when it is sought; for many years' membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church; for class instruction; for the Christian Science publications; for the privilege of having contributed to various funds for carrying on the work of The Mother Church and its branches; and for what service I have been able to give in church and Sunday school work.
