Signs of the Times

Topic: Educating Oneself

[Albert Sidney Lehr, in the Missouri School Journal, St. Louis]

"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void." Have you ever noticed how many times the word "word" occurs in the Bible—both in the New and the Old Testament? It will reward you richly to make the search. And if you will read every sentence and verse in which "word" or "words" is found, and make its inmost truth and meaning your very own, it will be worth a college education to you ... ! What is more, if you are really intelligent, and desire to make the most of your life, you will never speak as carelessly and handle your words as recklessly as you have before.

Your words, either unuttered or expressed, have a tremendous effect, even a decisive effect, upon your life and fortune. Do you yearn for health, and prosperity, and happiness? ... Do you crave to exercise influence with your fellows, have their respect, their admiration and love? Ah, if you but knew how all these are made or destroyed by the thoughts you think and the words you speak!
