For many years I read books bearing on nearly every well-known religious teaching, searching for a religion that was definitely operative in human welfare, as a positive expression of Principle or law. My search was not rewarded, and I became an agnostic, allowing that most ethics were beautiful, but none were demonstrable.

In a state of much discord and discontent, I attended a Christian Science church in continuation of this long search for harmony. I remember sitting near the entrance so as to be able to make a quick exit if my investigation was unfruitful. Even then, at that first service, I felt a quality of thought manifested by the congregation which was new to me, in an intellectual way, and at that early period in my search this was more important to me than the teaching itself.

I began then to go to the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, still in a critical state of thought, demanding a sign in my personal experience similar to those in the testimonies I heard; and in spite of this skeptical, critical though honest endeavor, I had my first healing in an unexpected manner.
