I should like to express my gratitude for a wonderful...
I should like to express my gratitude for a wonderful healing I had four years ago. I was new in this country and I was also new in Christian Science. I had been studying it for only about six months when suddenly I became very ill with blood poisoning. This came supposedly from an open cut on the thumb becoming infected from a severe skin disease with which a child I was caring for was afflicted. I did not know how to meet the difficulty scientifically, so suddenly I was running a high fever and becoming quite ill. I thought that this was a good opportunity to prove the truth of Christian Science, so I telephoned to a practitioner, but the people in the house were very antagonistic toward this Science and they called a doctor and a trained nurse. The doctor said that I might lose the arm or even die if I did not go to the hospital at once, as the inflammation had already extended above the elbow; but I firmly insisted on seeing the practitioner, who was at last called and came from a near-by city. I felt a great peace when the practitioner took over the case and made arrangements for me to go to a quiet house and have a Christian Science nurse. The next morning I seemed very ill, as the poison appeared to be affecting the whole body. The practitioner came at once and in a short time I was much improved. She impressed upon me many times that if I wished a quick healing I must hold only love toward the family where I was employed and not be disturbed at their attitude toward Christian Science. In three days I was out of bed and in one week went to church. In two weeks I went back to my duties, to the doctor's great surprise. He said I was lucky to be alive.
My employer had told me that if I had medical treatment in a hospital she would pay all expenses, but otherwise would not contribute. The practitioner told me to bear no resentment and to see God's child as perfect, and that the full demonstration—in relation to this problem as well as the physical one—ought to be made. It was all beautifully met. The father of the sick child applied to the insurance company, where his household was insured, and they paid all expenses willingly, saying they were lucky not to have to pay more, and they gave Christian Science the credit for so quick a healing.
I am very grateful for that experience. It changed my whole outlook on life. Since then Christian Science has been my only help in trouble and has proved infallible in every way, enlarging my understanding of the wise words of Mary Baker Eddy, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494).
