No doubt Christian Science comes to each one in the way...
No doubt Christian Science comes to each one in the way to best meet the individual need, although the need may not be clear at the time. For several years I had not been well, and like the woman in the Bible, "had suffered many things of many physicians, ... and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." A state of invalidism was predicted unless I would submit to an operation, which I was unwilling to do. Being forced to make a decision between a doctor, who seemed to give me no relief, and Christian Science treatment, of which I knew nothing, I unhesitatingly chose Christian Science. It has proved sufficient for every one of my needs.
When I first began attending the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, I had to overcome a feeling of resentment because so much gratitude was expressed for Mrs. Eddy. One evening, after listening rebelliously to the testimonies, and arguing with myself that all praise should be given to God—that He had done the work—a lady arose and said that when she first came into Christian Science she went to a practitioner and accused her of worshiping Mrs. Eddy instead of God. The practitioner replied that she did not worship Mrs. Eddy, but she loved Mrs. Eddy because she had taught her how to love God. This came as though in answer to my own thoughts and showed me how unjust I had been to one who unselfishly and lovingly had done so much for mankind.
I have been healed of tumors, an irritating skin trouble, and a badly sprained foot and ankle within forty-eight hours. At one time I stepped off a landing, and missing three steps came down very heavily on a cement floor. I had to be helped to my feet by two friends, who with myself were entering a church to attend a lecture. One friend declared aloud, "Mind decides whether or not the flesh shall be discolored, painful, swollen, and inflamed" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 385). As I listened to the lecture, trying to make its truths my own, the healing work was so nearly manifested that on reaching the place where I was staying, and where Christian Science was looked upon with much disfavor, I went about my duties without limping. Once more I rejoiced because the healing was so complete that none of the errors my friend had rebuked were evidenced. When my dear mother passed on I also overcame a sense of separation and loss more quickly, as I realized that God's ideas can never be separated, but always dwell in perfect, unbroken harmony. I am happy to have discarded a belief of pain in one of my hips, recently, by knowing the truth that matter has no sensation. The condition disappeared, and I had been going up and down stairs freely before I remembered that it had previously been quite difficult to do so. Many false beliefs have been eradicated from my consciousness, some with the aid of practitioners and some through my own understanding.
