The Stone Rolled Away

ON the resurrection morn, as Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, the mother of James and Salome, came near to the sepulcher of Jesus, the question which seemed uppermost in their thoughts was, "Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?" Three days before this the great stone had been rolled into position and, by the order of Pilate, sealed, so that it could not be removed.

These women had been very closely associated with the Master. They had listened to his wonderful teachings and witnessed many of his mighty works. Still it is quite evident that they did not really expect he would rise again on the third day in accordance with his promise. Instead, having accepted the verdict of so-called mortal mind, they were now returning to do for the body after the custom of their time. And they were seeking some person or persons to roll away the stone which had seemed to separate them from their dear Master.

Imagine their surprise when, upon reaching the door of the sepulcher, they found the stone rolled away! Jesus, however, was not where he had been left, nor could they see him anywhere. Yet he was right there with them in the garden. But their acceptance of the universal belief in death and the belief that Jesus had died, so completely obscured their vision that they were unable to recognize him until, according to the Gospel of John, he spoke to Mary Magdalene, calling her by name. This immediately broke the mesmerism of false belief and enabled her to both see and recognize her beloved Master.
