In your issue of May 4 a contributor, writing of newspaper records of cases dealing with the refusal of Christian Scientists to call in a doctor, says: "The theory apparently is that if the patient is to be cured he will be cured by 'the law of God' and not by any human help. This is a fallacy." This statement indicates an ignorance of the basis and method of Christian Science healing, and I shall be glad if you will allow me briefly to state the truth. Christian Science reinstates the teaching of Christ Jesus regarding the nature of God and of man's relationship to Him; and this teaching is made practical today, as it was in the time of the man of Nazareth and his disciples, in the healing of both sin and sickness.

Through many years of sickness and suffering, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, sought for healing of mind and body in the known medical systems, but without finding more than temporary relief. At last, when in dire necessity on account of injuries resulting from an accident, she turned to the Bible, of which she had been a lifelong student, and as she read an account of healing there came to her clearly the recognition that it was the understanding of spiritual law which enabled Christ Jesus to do his healing work and that that law was always operative. That revelation instantaneously healed her; and she then devoted her life to a close study of the Bible to learn more of this law of God, divine Principle, and to make it available to all men. Her discovery and the rules for making it practical in daily living are elucidated in her textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the results of practicing Christian Science may be found in the testimonies given at the Wednesday evening meetings in Christian Science churches all over the world and in those published in the Christian Science periodicals. Mrs. Eddy appreciated the work for humanity which is being done by doctors when she wrote in the textbook (p. 151): "Great respect is due the motives and philanthropy of the higher class of physicians. We know that if they understood the Science of Mind-healing, and were in possession of the enlarged power it confers to benefit the race physically and spiritually, they would rejoice with us."
