The resurrection of Christ [Jesus] is historical fact. The Christian Church will never cease to confess that "he rose again the third day." But the resurrection is more than that : it is the revelation of the eternal order, the manifestation of that order within our world and at a certain point of time. We cannot treat it as though it were just a piece, even though the most remarkable piece, of secular history. . . . The credibility of the Gospel narratives has not been undermined by modern critical study of them. But just because we have here the supreme revelation of the power and goodness of God, the final word of Christian response is the word of faith. The Easter blessing is the blessing upon those who have not seen and yet have believed.

The sunlight of that Easter morning is a parable of what the resurrection meant in our Lord's human life, and may mean for us. For him the shadow of the cross lay behind. . . .
