Twenty-two years ago Christian Science came into my life when every material means of healing had failed me. As a result of typhoid fever I was a semi-invalid for twelve years; I was unable to sit up all day, was on a strict, diet, and constantly thought of self. One sickness after another appeared. Every material means of help, including materia medica, osteopathy, surgery, and change of climate, was thoroughly tried with no healing results. Finally, when I was in despair, a friend persuaded me to turn to Christian Science.

I shall never forget my first visit to a practitioner's office. As I went in I hoped no one would see me, for I had thought of Christian Science as some mysterious thing; but when I came out of that office I did not care who saw me, for I had found my God and I was convinced that I should be healed, although I knew not how. I began reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in connection with the Bible, as well as having help from the practitioner; and in two weeks I was leading a normal life. It seemed to me that I had entered heaven and my troubles were over. If anything of a disturbing nature appeared, all I had to do was to get in touch with a practitioner and harmony was soon restored.

After a few years of this, the time came when I did not get results from treatments and had one difficulty after another until finally I lost all use of my legs for about eight months. During this time my confidence in God's power to heal me never wavered. I was never tempted to turn to material means. I had had too many proofs to doubt. I knew I had some lesson to learn and that God would show me the way, no matter how slow I was in hearing His voice. Finally a practitioner awakened me to see that I had been trying to heal a sick body instead of sick thoughts—that as I kept my thoughts filled with good and expressed the divine qualities, I would be governed harmoniously. I saw that I had not been bound by any material condition but by false beliefs. The time had come for me to learn how to apply this truth for myself and not expect another to work out my salvation. My healing came very soon after this arousing, and in a short time I was leading a more active and useful life than ever before. One by one old physical difficulties disappeared. Old ways of thinking also dropped away; I was indeed born again.
