The Perception and Acceptance of Truth

THE rule for Christian healing was clearly and concisely stated by Christ Jesus when, in addressing those Jews who believed on him, he said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." No limitations as to person, time, place, or condition; no restrictions as to type or kind of evil. What a marvelous statement! To think that anyone who believes on him and continues in his word can, by knowing the truth, free himself from whatever evil seems to be confronting him! Surely such a promise is a veritable guidepost to the kingdom of heaven.

That so much sickness and suffering are seemingly present today, in spite of this centuries-old rule for their positive prevention and cure, is largely due to a lack of understanding as to how to apply it. Mrs. Eddy throws light on this point on page 202 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," when she writes, "If men would bring to bear upon the study of the Science of Mind half the faith they bestow upon the so-called pains and pleasures of material sense, they would not go on from bad to worse, until disciplined by the prison and the scaffold; but the whole human family would be redeemed through the merits of Christ,—through the perception and acceptance of Truth." Two steps, then, are necessary if one would gain the power to heal by spiritual means—first, the perception; secondly, the acceptance, of Truth.

Truth is always positive in character. It is harmonious, eternal, and all-powerful. It is no respecter of persons. It always works in conformity with divine law. In Truth there is the right answer to every human problem, the remedy for every fleshly ill. Christ Jesus understood this and proved it by his works. It was his provable understanding which enabled him to give his followers this positive rule. He knew that harmonious results always follow the correct application of Truth, exactly as the right mathematical answer always follows the correct application of the governing mathematical rule.
